Being an overweight person in today's world is becoming the norm but the problem is that younger and younger children are also being affected and of course they grow into overweight adults. In order to lose those excess pounds, many people resort to surgery whereas other people realize that a healthy diet with regular exercise is a better method. Another group prefers the use of weight loss drugs to aid them in losing weight so that results can be seen more quickly.

These drugs usually work buy telling the brain it's no longer hungry, stimulating metabolism to aid the shedding of excess fat. The problem arose when it was found that one of the side effects from this type of drug was the increased risk of heart valve disease and of course the drug was quickly withdrawn from use. More recently, new drugs have been developed and prescribed by doctors; many of which are still waiting for FDA approval.

These weight loss pills have become popular and you can almost guarantee that you will know of someone who has tried them with success. Let's be honest, it's in our nature to like things that provide near instant results, without having to put in any effort. This approach has seen consumers spend millions of dollars every year and has generated huge profits for the drug companies who manufacture and sell the weight loss drug.

Weight control pills can be purchased either over-the-counter or prescribed by a doctor but even with the advances in medical technology they can still cause a lot of health related problems which can be unpleasant such as diarrhoea and vomiting. Surprisingly more dangerous side effects exist including stroke, heart attack, renal failure to name only a few, so these drugs are still far from safe to use.

This can lower the possibility of some side effects occurring, although this may depend on the genetic makeup of the person using them. These effects can be equally unpleasant as the side effects occurring as a result of taking weight control pills.

Generally from the reports it would seem that the effectiveness of weight loss drugs is improved if they are combined with a regular exercise program and a low calorie diet~Despite all the bad publicity, weight loss drugs do work but they are more successful if they are used in conjunction with a low calorie diet and regular exercise, preferably using a properly worked out exercise regime.} This type of diet requires a balance of the food groups to ensure a proper intake of vitamins, minerals and fibre, almost all of which can be bought at your local supermarket but may require a little preparation.

Of course this should always be combined with a good exercise routine which will use up excess calories and provide a good all round fitness workout. Of course a good exercise regime will combine exercises that increase the heart rate and exercises that use weights to tone the muscles.
